Promoting Yourself in a Male-Dominated Workplace: A Discussion led by Destiny Loyd

In this week’s We Can Tech Too! meeting, Destiny discussed self promotion in a male-dominated workplace. The meeting encouraged open discussion and opinions on how women should promote themselves. Destiny’s main points came from Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In. The advice to be successful in the workplace is to: sit at the table, make your partner a real partner, and don’t leave before you leave. Destiny said, “in the end, it’s about having confidence in yourself and not letting the fact that you are a woman deter you from doing anything.”
Professional Networking: A Discussion led by Janice Miller

Networking is often referred to as the “side door” approach to obtaining jobs and internships. Ball State’s Janice Miller spoke to the undergraduates and grad students of We Can Tech Too! today about the misconceptions of networking and how to build your own network.
Miller suggestions uses these three questions when interacting with strangers:
1) What is your name?
2) Where are you from?
3) What brings you here?
She says these questions open up a conversation to find similar interests. Networking should be viewed as a “give-and-get” relationship, Miller says. Too often people will give their business cards to everyone in an attempt to “network,” but actually the most successful networking stems from creating personal relationships.
Work/Life Balance: A Discussion led by Cindy Phillips

Cindy Phillips, Projects Director from Interactive Intelligence, spoke to students Friday about work/life balance and tips on succeeding in the workplace.

Diversity in the Workplace: A Discussion led by Robin Phelps-Ward

Robin Phelps-Ward began by asking We Can Tech Too! members to write down a time when they felt uncomfortable because they were in an environment where they were the minority. Students then shared their responses and were able to identify emotions that other minorities are sometimes faced with daily in the workforce.
Phelps-Ward then explained terminology used when discussing diversity.
- Double Jeopardy: When an individual has more than one minority characteristic
- Tokenism: When an individual is referred to speak on the behalf of their entire group. This denies that there are individuals within a group and relies and reinforces stereotypes.
- Micro-inequity: Subtle things said or done based on traits of an individual.
Phelps-Ward recommends having more discussions on diversity, researching diversity issues in the workplace, and mentoring individuals who are disadvantaged because of their minority characteristic.

WWiT held a We Can Tech Too! meeting in the Solutions Center at CICS. The meeting opened with pumpkin decorating and delightful conversation. After decorating our pumpkins, we watched a Ted Talk by Sheryl Sandberg about the lack of women leaders in business. The meeting wrapped up with a discussion of Sandberg’s advice for female professionals, why we thought they were important in the workplace, and how our past experiences validated her points.

There’s a choice women feel they have between professional success and personal fulfillment
Keeping women in the workforce
So how can we keep women in the workplace?
1. Sit at the table
Don’t underestimate your own abilities, negotiate, and own your success.
Reach for promotion, sit at table, will have to make sacrifices that men won’t have to.
2. Make your partner a real partner
Home responsibilities must be equally important for both genders.
3. Don’t leave before you leave
A career must be challenging, rewarding, and must be making a difference.
Don’t make decisions too far in advance that will come back to affect your future career
satisfaction: Keep your foot on gas pedal.
